Foreign minister: Nobody should doubt Lithuania’s willingness to help refugees

According to the minister, no country should doubt Lithuania’s solidarity and wish to help refugees, however, the number of migrants to be taken in should not exceed the country’s capabilities.

“Our position is clear and has been pointed out several times already: we want the obligations to be made on a voluntary basis; moreover, we have already taken in a certain number of refugees, so, if need be, we will review the number once again,” the minister said on the radio Žinių Radijas.

“We are not seeking some quotas or figures. We simply accept people who stand in need of help and this is done not only by the government but also by public organisations and the Church,” he said.

Last week, with the help of Caritas and the Catholic Church, three Christian families from Iraq, who suffered religious persecution in their homeland, were accepted in Lithuania. Last year, Lithuania took in 40 Christians from Syria.
