Former Soviet police officer sentenced for deporting civilians from Lithuania

Lionginas Kononovas, 87, was not present at the court hearing due to his age.

“Following the examination of the evidence and witnesses’ testimonies, it was identified and proved that in October 1951, as an officer of the Soviet repressive structure, he intentionally deported Lithuanian residents to the territory of the country that occupied Lithuania,” the court ruled.

Kononovas denied his guilt, saying that he was an ordinary police officer in 1951-1952 and was in charge of the protection of the police building and ensuring public order. He claimed he could not speak or write Russian and therefore could sign the papers of a woman who was being deported. But experts proved otherwise.

The ruling is not final and can be appealed within 20 days to the Lithuanian Court of Appeals.
