Fraudsters trying to exploit Lithuania’s currency transition

The fraudsters present forged documents entitled “Declaration Document for the State Tax Inspectorate” and tell their victims that they should itemise all euro and litas banknotes in their possession.

“We kindly ask Lithuania’s residents to stay vigilant and shut their door for any “mobile VMI couriers” who offer to count and register their money,” says Stasė Aliukonytė-Šnirienė, head of the VMI Department of Services to Taxpayers.

She insists that no representatives of any state institutions, such as the VMI, the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT) or the police, go to people’s houses to register and exchanger their money.
