Google Street View to update Lithuania’s map

DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij

Google Street View cars will be driving in the region until the end of August. The aim is to photograph major cities and update maps of tourist attractions.

In Lithuania, the application was launched in January 2013. It allows all internet users to virtually travel across Lithuania and have a panoramic view of Lithuanian cities and main tourist attractions.

Google itself photographed Lithuanian streets, roads and tourist destination in June-July 2012.

At first, the State Data Protection Inspectorate made a decision that the project contradicts people’s right to privacy. However, the State Data Protection Inspectorate partook in the legal discussion between the Ministry of Justice and Google and found a common ground on implementing Google Street View project.

Google Street View program began in 2007.
