Government has no plans to tax pensions – PM

Pensioners
DELFI / Andrius Ufartas

“These were the minister’s thoughts in a conversation with the media. The government has not discussed and will not discuss the issue of pension taxation,” Skvernelis said on LRT Radio on Tuesday morning.

When asked by Delfi.lt last week if pensions should be taxed, Kukuraitis said: “That is a serious question. Given the current (low) level of our pensions, you understand what burden that would place (on pensioners)”.

“Okay, we take that as a proposal. I’ll ask for this issue to be included into discussions when we put forward other proposals to the prime minister in late April,” he added.

The Social Security and Labour Ministry later issued a statement to say that what Kukuraitis had emphasized was that taxing pensions would put a too heavy burden on retired people.
