“The volume of political operations in Switzerland is minor, with officials of high-ranking officials organized every three years, on average. The Swiss embassy to Lithuania is accredited from Latvia since 1992. Switzerland has no plans of founding an embassy in Lithuania any time soon,” the Foreign Ministry said in comment of the embassy’s closure.
According to the statement, the ministry will work to keep the current level of cooperation after the shutdown of the embassy. In the past few years, the trade volume between Lithuania and Switzerland has not reached the pre-crisis level, with Switzerland’s direct investments in Lithuania declining.
After the closure, Lithuania would still have its consular office in Geneva. In 2016, the embassy in Bern issued around 200 travel documents, 80 civil registry documents and conducted 40 notary actions. The ambassadorial post is currently held by Valentina Zeitler.
According to data provided by Swiss migration authorities, over 2,000 Lithuanians currently reside in the country.
