Group wants to stage rally against ‘enforced immigration’ in Vilnius

With the migration crisis in Europe worsening and the number of migrants that will have to be resettled in Lithuania growing, the group launched an online petition against “enforced immigration”. It was signed by 8,000 people within one week. The group also collected 2,500 signatures on paper in four days. The initiators of the petition say it is a clear signal that Lithuanians understand the “dangers of forced migration”.

“It is also obvious that Lithuania is not ready to accept even several hundred migrants, while the latest developments suggest that Brussels will force Lithuania to take on a much higher number of economic migrants and refugees,” the committee’s report read.

A representative of the committee, Vitalijus Balkus, claims that people in Lithuania are not xenophobic or racist, but simply concerned about Lithuania’s future; these concerns, he says, not directed against any national, ethnic or religious group.

Another rally was staged in Vilnius last Saturday, welcoming refugees and urging the Lithuanian state and society to do more to help people fleeing from war in the Middle East.
