Grinius was sworn in as president exactly 90 years ago, on June 8, 1926, in Kaunas, the then capital of Lithuania.
However, his presidency lasted only a little over six months before Antanas Smetona carried out a coup, installing himself as president in December 1926.
The Presidential Palace in Kaunas is hosting an exhibition dedicated to Grinius’ life and legacy.
Grinius was the third president of Lithuania, having previously served as the country’s prime minister and chairman of the committee that drafted the country’s constitution.
The Lithuanian parliament has designated 2016 the year of President Grinius.
