Kaunas considering free public transport on state holidays

DELFI (R.Achmedovo nuotr.)

The proposal is to offer free bus and trolley-bus rides in Kaunas on Feb. 16, March 11 and July 6 every year, in addition to Sept. 22, which is marked as the World Car-Free Day.

The final decision should be made by the Kaunas City Council at the meeting next week. If approval is granted, free bus and trolley-bus rides will be available already next month on March 11.

Vilius Šiliauskas, deputy director of the municipality’s administration, said the exception was aimed at reducing traffic during events in the city center on public holidays.

“On all major holidays, we organize additional late bus and trolley-bus routes for Kaunas residents to get home. With availability of free public transport on these holidays, the people of Kaunas will have no significant reasons to drive their cars to the events,” said Šiliauskas.

In Vilnius, public transport was free of charge on Feb. 16.
