Liberal MP to face the incumbent in Vilnius mayor run-offs

In the Sunday’s elections, Šimašius received 33.96 percent of the vote, while Zuokas got 18.05 percent, shows data from all polling stations of the capital city in Lithuania’s first direct mayoral elections.

In the final line-up of candidates, Zuokas is closely followed by MEP Valdemar Tomaševski, the leader of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania that participated in the election together with the Alliance of Russians.

Šimašius, 41, is a lawyer by education and worked at the Lithuanian Free Market Institute between 1995 and 2008, serving as the minister of justice in the right-wing government in 2008-2012. He is now a member of the parliamentary Economic Committee.

Zuokas, 47, has been heading Vilnius since April 2011 after serving as mayor in 2003-2007.
