“It is obvious that Eligijus Masiulis’ career as a politician is and should be over and that such amounts or any amount of money should not come into politicians’ hands in the form of cash,” he said.

Masiulis said at a video conference hosted by Delfi.lt earlier in the day that he no longer saw himself as a politician, at least in the near future.

“We can hardly speak about my continued presence in politics, given the situation I am in,” the former member of the Seimas said.

“Obviously, I am not even thinking about that today. I do believe that this case has no prospects from the legal point of view and that I will be able to defend myself, but alongside legal issues, there are moral issues and having destroyed many of my myths and the political road I had pursued for 20 years, today I am not thinking about what will happen in the future,” he said.

Law enforcement officials suspect that Masiulis accepted a bribe of 106,000 euros for himself and other individuals from Raimondas Kurlianskis, vice-president of MG Baltic, one of Lithuania’s biggest manufacturing, trade, real estate, and media groups, in exchange for “certain decisions favorable and financially beneficial to the group.”

Masiulis says that he borrowed 90,000 euros from Kurlianskis as a loan.
