“People are being maimed physically, tortured psychologically. The regime wants to control every aspect of their lives. The recent report leaves no doubt that the country’s leadership is aware of the ongoing crimes and supports such behaviour,” Lithuanian Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė said.

According to the diplomat, the UN Security Council should consider referring the DPRK case to the International Criminal Court and also introducing targeted sanctions against the regime’s representatives whose actions could be seen as crimes against humanity.

The unprecedented UN Security Council meeting was held amid the United States’ claims that North Korea has carried out a cyber attack against a Hollywood studio.

Lithuania is a member of the UN Security Council in 2014-2015.
