Lithuania celebrating 25 years of Constitution

A solemn ceremony is held at the parliament to mark the occasion, with a special exhibition to be opened at a gallery in the building.

Among participants of the event will be Moldova’s Constitutional Court president Tudor Pantiru, officials of the county’s parliament, representatives of Constitutional Courts of Georgia and Ukraine, former Polish president Bronislaw Komorowski, etc.

To mark 25 years of the Constitution, the front of the building of the Constitutional Court will be adorned with memorial plaques picturing the Lithuanian Independence Act of February 16 of 1918 and the Restoration of Independence Act of March 11 of 1990.

Lithuania’s current Constitution was adopted by referendum on October 25 of 1992 after the draft was endorsed by the Supreme Council – Reconstituent Seimas.

It is the only Constitution of Lithuania approved by referendum. It was supported by 81 percent of all votes, i.e., was endorsed by 1.5 percent of eligible voters.
