Genovaitė Sakalauskienė, the mother of Sakalauskas, signatories to Lithuania’s March 1990 independence declaration and members of the Seimas are expected to attend Tuesday’s commemoration ceremony at a memorial stone marking the place where he was killed.
Another two Lithuanian volunteers were injured in the clash with troops from a special Soviet army unit who staged a provocation outside the Seimas building in Vilnius on August 21, 1991, the day when the coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev collapsed.
