Lithuania should cut financial, reputation damage amid fine for railway co – president

“Unfortunately, we see that this government is also in no rush to search for solutions, which will be needed. We cannot use the method practiced by the earlier government: denying and attempting to avoid, attempting to lie in public that everything is fine and that everything would be OK,” the president told the national radio LRT on Wednesday.

“All we can do now is attempt to reduce the potentially additional damage to our reputation and finances,” she said.

In Grybauskaite’s words, Lithuania should also avoid overspending on lawyers. Nevertheless, she did not specify whether the EC fine should be appealed to the Court of Justice of the European Union, emphasizing that the decision was up to the government.

The president said Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai’s operations should not be separated, as this is not allowed by the current geopolitical situation. Lithuania will probably have to rebuild the dismantled railway stretch, she added, noting that the fine might only be reduced in court.
