The government authorized Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Raimonda Murmokaitė to sign the joint communiqué with Tuvalu.

Under a draft governmental resolution prepared by the Foreign Ministry, Tuvalu has twice turned to Lithuania for the start of diplomatic relations, however, it was rejected due to the country’s stance on South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

“On 4 February 2014, Tuvalu revised its foreign policies – it recalled its recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and started diplomatic relations with Georgia, leaving Lithuania with no reasons to refuse diplomatic relations with the Pacific state,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
