“Sanctions to Russia are not related to this, but it will definitely help to open the eyes of some colleagues,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius told reporters in Vilnius on Thursday.
Estonian Foreign Minister Jurgen Ligi also said, “I hope this at least will open some eyes and make lifting the sanctions more unpopular”.
Both ministers underlined that they currently saw no reason for lifting the sanctions against Russia.
The EU and US sanctions on Russia’s financial, military and oil sectors were imposed in the summer of 2014 in the wake of the Malaysia Airlines’ flight MH17 crash in eastern Ukraine.
An international team of investigations announced last week that they had evidence that the Buk missile that hit the jet had been transported to eastern Ukraine from Russia.
Russia and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine have repeatedly denied any involvement in the downing of the plane.
