Lithuanian foreign minister to go to Georgia

During the visit, Linkevičius is scheduled to meet with Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the country’s new Foreign Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili. The meetings will focus on bilateral issues, Georgia’s EU and NATO integration, Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The Lithuanian foreign minister will also attend an international conference on the new geopolitical situation.

Last week, Garibashvili unexpectedly dismissed the country’s previous foreign minister, replacing her with the economy minister, without explaining his motives.

Analysts and opposition politicians say the replacement reflects a lack of transparency in making political decisions in Georgia.

The composition of the Georgian Cabinet had been unchanged since 2012 when billionaire businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili and his Georgian Dream coalition came to power.

Ivanishvili resigned as prime minister in 2013 and appointed his protégé Garibashvili. But many believe the billionaire has remained the “backstairs influencer” in the Caucasian country with a population of 3.7 million.
