Lithuanian parliament to vote on new prosecutor general

Evaldas Pašilis
DELFI / Mindaugas Ažušilis

Most parliamentary group leaders have already pledged their support to 42-year-old Evaldas Pašilis, a judge from Ukmergė, who was nominated for the position by President Dalia Grybauskaitė last week.

Pašilis is the third candidate proposed for the position. The previous two, Nerijus Meilutis and Edita Dambrauskienė, were rejected by parliament in summer and in October, respectively. Some analysts saw the snub as a power play between the president and the ruling parties.

Pašilis has been a judge for 15 years. He started his career in Ukmergė and has been chairing the town’s court between 2007 and 2012.

According to the Lithuanian Constitution, prosecutor general is appointed by the president, but must be endorsed by parliament.
