Lithuanian schools receive new buses

A total of 48 new yellow Volkswagen Crafter school buses left from the capital to different cities and towns. For the first time, breathalysers were also handed over as a measure to ensure that drivers are sober at work.

Nineteen-seat vehicles were purchased in an open tender by the Ministry of Education and Science. LTL 6 million (EUR 1.7 million) was allocated for this in 2014.

The ministry has been purchasing school buses and giving them to municipalities since 2000. Throughout this time, a total of 691 buses were bought. The ministry plans to purchase 64 vehicles in 2015, 42 in 2016 and 48 in 2017.

Some buses are specially equipped for schoolchildren with special needs.

In 2013-2014 academic year, school buses carried 21,000 schoolchildren.
