The Lithuanian Social Democratic Labour Party will hold its constituent assembly on March 24.

“We are normal European center-left Social Democrats,” Gediminas Kirkilas, one of the founders of the party, told journalists on Friday in comment of the course of the political force.

MP Kirkilas said the party would have around 3,000 founders.

In his words, the party would include former members of the Labour Party, Širvintos Mayor Živilė Pinskuvienė and Kęstutis Daukšys, as well as the Social Democratic Labor Party’s MP Petras Čimbaras, the Order and Justice party‘s former member Remigijus Ačas, in addition to Druskininkai Mayor Ričardas Malinauskas.

Kirkilas said the Social Democratic Party‘s former leader Algirdas Butkevičius was yet undecided on joining the founders of the new party.

Kirkilas has been proposed as the head of the political force, however, more candidates can be submitted during the assembly.

According to the party’s bylaws, the party will consist of the party’s groups and branches.

The core of the new party includes old members of the Social Democratic Party that split from the political force last year after it decided to leave the ruling coalition with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union.
