Butkevičius was supported by 487 members, while his only competitor Algirdas Sysas, the vice-chairman of the party and the parliament, received 151 votes during the party’s congress. Another seven ballot papers were found damaged, Vitalijus Mitrofanovas, the chairman of the vote counting committee, confirmed to BNS.
Other candidates nominated by the Social Democratic Party’s branches were MEPs Vilija Blinkevičiūtė and Zigmantas Balčytis, as well as the party’s vice-chairman Gediminas Kirkilas. However, they all withdrew from the race for leadership.
Butkevičius said the key task for the future are the upcoming parliamentary elections and enhancement of competition for the party’s leader.
