Lithuanians support government position on Ukraine, survey shows

Asked whether Lithuania is providing enough support to Ukraine, 55 percent say the level of support is sufficient, 12 percent believe it is not, while 10 percent say it is too big and 23 percent believe Lithuania should have a neutral position on Ukraine.

The survey was carried out for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by public opinion and market research company Vilmorus on 4-15 December and involved 1,000 residents of Lithuania over the age of 18, the ministry’s Information and Public Relations Department told BNS on Tuesday.

It was announced last November that Lithuania would provide military assistance to Ukraine. The Lithuanian national defence minister confirmed early this year that Lithuania had supplied weaponry elements to the Ukrainian army, without elaborating.

The Lithuanian government is also providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine as well as medical treatment to injured Ukrainian troops. NGOs are also assisting Ukraine.

In the same survey, 44 percent of people said they wished Lithuania’s cooperation with the United States to grow closer, and 43 percent said the existing level of cooperation was sufficient. Eleven percent were critical of further deepening cooperation with the United States.

Almost two thirds (65 percent) said Lithuania should be fully involved in international anti-terror operations. Ten percent believe the country should only contribute financially to such operations, but should not take part in them. Twenty-three percent said they would not want Lithuania to take part in anti-terror operations at all.
