Vaišvilaitė told the UNESCO chief that the current geopolitical context required more active efforts of the international community to ensure safety of journalists and overcoming related challenges, first of all fighting against propaganda, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said.

Before the appointment, Vaišvilaitė served as ambassador to the Holy See from 2012 after working as adviser to president Valdas Adamkus, editor of Radio Free Europe in Prague and editor of the Vatican Radio in Rome.

Lithuania has had no permanent envoy to UNESCO since the former ambassador, Arūnas Gelūnas, won a parliamentary mandate last October.
