Lithuania’s culture minister ‘had clash of interest’

Šarūnas Birutis

“The decision we made is that the minister violated the law by failing to declare in due time his private interests in owning shares in a company in Bulgaria,” the commission’s chairman Romas Valentukevičius told BNS.

He noted that the decision was formal, as Birutis immediately declared his interests following media reports about the company. The complaint about the minister’s assets was submitted by MP Vytautas Juozapaitis of the opposition conservatives.

According to the earlier report by 15min.lt news portal, Birutis is one of the three owners of a Bulgaria-registered company Agrolitas, which purchased an 18.5 ha land site in eastern Bulgaria for €200,000 in February 2009.
