According to Linkevicius, the EU has so far failed to take sufficient measures to resolve the ongoing crisis in Ukraine where the government forces are fighting pro-Russian separatists.

“Unity is a very good word, everyone is for unity. But unity not to do anything it’s not for me. I don’t like it. We have to be united on doing something,” Linkevičius told journalists in Riga.

Asked whether EU member states would soon agree on the extension of the existing economic sanctions until the end of this year, the Lithuanian foreign minister said: “I hope so. It is the least we can do.”

He also believes the West should unanimously continue Russia’s isolation.

Meeting in Riga, EU foreign ministers are set to discuss the existing situation in Ukraine but no specific decisions are expected.

Latvia is currently holding the rotating EU presidency.
