“We talked about possibilities, about the projects that might be financed… They stated clearly that first of all, countries should have a clear strategy, which should clearly show energy, transport projects that might be co-financed from that fund,” Algirdas Butkevičius told BNS by phone from Brussels after a meeting with Jyrki Katainen, European Commissioner for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness.

Officials also discussed possibilities to implement projects through public-private partnerships, Butkevičius said.

“Lithuania, which is implementing certain projects together with Latvia and Estonia, could have a project that might be financed with that money. We also talked about GIPL, the gas interconnection between Poland and Lithuania. We asked for support and financing from the Connecting Europe Facility since our infrastructure costs would soar if we failed to get financial support from the European Union,” Prime Minister said, adding that the officials also talked about the synchronization of the Baltic electricity grids with those of Central and Western Europe.
