Butkevičius, a social democrat, commented that the Lithuanian Constitution holds that family is the basis of society and the state and that family is the place where one learns to study and to work.

“As our state approaches the 25th anniversary of independence restoration, we can rightly take pride in many things. Lithuania has established itself as a member of the European Union and NATO. We have successfully adopted the common currency of the EU, the euro, we are working on securing our energy independence, and our economy is growing. All these things are very important but not sufficient. The real basis of our state is strong and happy family. Therefore, attention to the family is and will remain one of the key priorities of our government,” said Butkevičius at the event in Šiauliai.
