Lithuania’s parliament has adopted the electronic communications act article 77 amendments that will require entities or companies providing electronic communications networks and (or) services to provide information about developments in electronic communications to intelligence authorities.
The amendments have also adopted the basis when entities providing electronic communications networks and (or) services, must establish the technical possibility for criminal intelligence entities, intelligence authorities and the investigating bodies to control the content transmitted through electronic communications networks.
The current Law on Electronic Communications no obligation for operators providing electronic communications networks and (or) services, to provide information to the intelligence authorities.
Similar laws adopted in the United States have been the subject of controversy after Edward Snowden revealed the level of surveillance carried out by US intelligence services of American citizens. Apple also recently refused to give the FBI access to data on the phone of a man who carried out a terrorist attack in California saying that it had to protect consumer privacy.
