Butkevičius, who is the prime minister of Lithuania, will have the possibility to modify the candidates’ ranking in the electoral list or include up to 10 new candidates. These candidates do not necessarily have to be party members.

According to unofficial reports, Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis, Lithuania’s representative in the EU Court of Auditors Rasa Budbergytė, Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna and, possibly, physicist Juras Banys could make it to the social democratic electoral list at Butkevičius’ discretion.

Butkevičius will be able to modify the ranking within “100 ranking spots”, which means that he can either move 100 candidates up or down one spot each or, for example, move five candidates up or down 20 spots.

Still, the leader must take into account the party’s statute when changing the order of candidates. One of the rules says that the list must maintain a gender balance so that neither men nor women make up more than 60 percent of the list. There is also a quota for young people and a spot traditionally reserved for trade union representatives.
