Furthermore, Skvernelis also took the opportunity to invite Pope Francis to visit Lithuania, noting that Lithuania’s ties with the Holy See had always been special.

“With its firm stance, the Holy See has helped the people of Lithuania in the struggle for freedom, and the pope’s attention to Lithuania has always been a source of hope and belief. The Vatican’s non-recognition of Lithuania’s occupation and annexation made it possible for our diplomatic mission to the Holy See to operate even during the occupation, and this is especially important for Lithuania,” said the prime minister.

The leader of the Catholic Church has only visited Lithuania once – Pope John Paul II was in Lithuania in September of 1993.
