“The troops who lived together with the junior private or were in close contact with him received preventive shots of medication and are subjected to additional health checks. Their barracks are being disinfected, cleaned and aired,” the Defence Ministry said in a comment to BNS.

The ministry’s representatives said the source or the time of infection is yet to be established.

“It is shocking news came unexpected to all of us, as the troop went home for the weekend feeling well and in good mood, as always. It is hard to believe how instant and lethal the infection can be,” Lieutenant Colonel Eugenijus Lastauskas, the commander of the Duke Vaidotas Battalion, said in a press release.

The 19-year-old member of the mandatory initial military service died in a Vilnius hospital of acute meningitis.

According to data provided by the Center of Communicable Diseases and AIDS, 75 cases of meningitis were reported in Lithuania last year, including seven with lethal outcome.

In addition to the troop, 14 people were diagnosed with meningitis in 2017, one of them died.
