“I think the whole thing was rather based on emotions and there were insufficient discussions on this candidate. In my opinion, one of the problems is that we probably should have had wider discussions with leaders of the political groups to hear their opinion as it is a very important position,” Butkevičius told the Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday morning.
The prime minister said he had also expected Meilutis to be confirmed for the position, adding that he had no doubt about Meilutis’ competence.
“I had a good impression about his competence when he answered questions during the meeting with our political group,” the prime minister said.
Forty-six members of the Seimas voted in favour of Meilutis’ appointment in a secret ballot, 50 were against and 19 lawmakers abstained.
Under Lithuania’s Constitution, the prosecutor general is appointed by the president with the Seimas’ approval.
