“There are always possibilities (to carry out reforms) if there is knowledge, understanding and political will. Thus, we’ll see what results all this brings in the future,” Grybauskaitė told reporters in Vilnius.

“The processes have been slow thus far, but let’s not forget that we have a great number of new people in politics, both in the Seimas and in the government. Some of its members are professionals, but they are politically inexperienced,” she said.

According to the president, politicians must assume political responsibility for any amendments to the new Labour Code.

“Political responsibility must rest with politicians. They were elected by people and must deliver on their promises. No one has the legal or political right to shift responsibility to non-political structures,” Grybauskaitė said when asked what she thought about the government’s decision to wait for the Tripartite Council‘s opinion on certain changes to the Labour Code.

The Tripartite Council brings together the government, employers and trade unions.
