Officials from the Vilnius Territorial Customs Office on Tuesday found 67 cartons of illegal cigarettes

The driver of the Volvo truck, which was pulled over in the Zarasai district, near the border with Latvia, on Tuesday, told officials from the Vilnius Territorial Customs Office that he was transporting confectionery products to Russia’s Kaliningrad region.

However, his truck was X-rayed at the Medininkai border checkpoint, revealing 67 cartons of smuggled cigarettes hidden among boxes of sweets, cakes and chocolates.

The value of the haul, including the taxes, is put at up to 100,000 euros.

The Russian national, identified by his initials I. Sh., was detained for 48 hours. A pre-trial investigation into the incident is ongoing.
