The plane was flying over the Baltic Sea from the Russian region of Kaliningrad to mainland Russia, Captain Donatas Suchockis, public relations officer at the Lithuanian army‘s Joint Staff, told BNS.
“It was flying with a pre-filled flight plan, maintained communication but its onboard transponder was switched off,” he said.
On Monday, NATO jets were also scrambled from Šiauliai to accompany another Il-20.
The NATO air policing mission in Lithuania is carried out by Norway and Italy, and Belgian jets are stationed in Poland and British jets are in Estonia.
