“The principles of the Constitution and the rule of law are unquestionable, but that does not justify the use of force,” the committee said in a statement on the situation in Spain.
It underlined the need for dialogue and compromise and respect for the rule of law and citizens’ expectation in dealing with the “particularly difficult situation” and called on both sides to begin a “serious and open dialogue”.
The committee’s statement comes after violence broke out in Spain last Sunday as Spanish authorities used force against the Catalan independence referendum’s organizers and participants.
