“The best way is for him to decide. He should not be (a Seimas member). However, we cannot impose the conditions upon him, unless we start an impeachment process. We should amend the Seimas statute, as the Constitutional Court has questioned the article on impeachment, it is kind of ineffective now, therefore, we have a special case in legal terms but I think we will solve it shortly, as I see impeachment necessary here,” Pranckietis told BNS Lithuania on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis says he does not yet see reasons for launching impeachment against Bastys.

“I do not think that, in light of the available facts, there is a reason for impeachment but we need to see at what the information is, what the State Security Department has in its possession and the colleagues should then decide whether the MP can perform as an independent representative of the nation free of any influence,” Skvernelis told journalists at the parliament on Friday.

In his words, the question about being able to conduct duties of an MP should be answered by Bastys himself. The Social Democratic MP has confirmed plans to step down from the Seimas leadership but keep his MP mandate.

“The State Security Department conducted its function and concluded that the politician cannot be trusted, when it comes to information that state politicians have in their disposition and that can include a state secret. Can this be an obstacle for duties as an MP – this has to be decided by the Seimas member,” said the PM.
