“I will ask the VSD leadership to help us establish the directions we should go in. We wouldn’t want to get bogged down in large-scale historical investigations. However, if such problems exist, we can’t stay away and this investigation will have to be deepened,” he said on the Žinių Radijas radio station on Wednesday.

The Seimas on Tuesday approved conclusions by the Committee on National Security and Defence that Social Democratic MP Mindaugas Bastys had acted against the interests of the Lithuanian state by maintaining close and constant contacts with representatives of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom and Russian intelligence officers.

A special commission set up for Bastys ‘ impeachment has until mid-May to present its conclusion on whether there are sufficient grounds to launch the process.

The lawmaker describes the committee’s probe as a biased political investigation.
