The majority of highly qualified workers that use the blue card system come to Lithuania to work from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, according to lawyer Andrejus Mokšinas.
Mokšinas, who was speaking at the LOGIN 2016 festival, emphasised the importance of the blue card visa in the European Union’s labour market.
“Blue card is an authorization to legally live and work in Lithuania and to move to another EU member state for highly qualified workers. And one of the most important advantages is that in five years a professional can apply for a permanent residence permit in the country of issue,” said Mokšinas.
The most in-demand workers among Lithuanian businesses are IT specialists.
“If the shortage of IT professionals not only in Lithuania, but also in other EU countries, is not surprising, other employee flows to Lithuania from foreign countries are somewhat unexpected. Teachers working in education are the second biggest group to come here, and the third – people who run businesses or departments,” said Mokšinas.
