Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius indicated that Arminas had been killed “during his lunch break at a school in southern Sweden. It’s an unfortunate, tragic event. Our ambassador has contacted his family and expressed his sympathy, offering to support them or help them if needed.”

The incident happened in Göinge School in Broby. Pileckas was rushed to a hospital in nearby Kristianstad, where he was pronounced dead.

Though Swedish police have offered few details about the murder, citing their ongoing investigation, they have indicated that the two boys may have had a record of conflict. The 14-year-old suspect’s father claims that his son was bullied at school, but Pileckas’ father, Žydrūnas, disagreed. In a video on Snapchat, a boy purported to be Pileckas slaps the suspect in the face, and his father claims that this had been in order to defend a girl that the suspect had been harassing. The video and the surrounding circumstances are currently being investigated by Swedish police.

Numerous memorials have sprung up around the school and the neighborhood mourning the boy’s death.
