The speakers will discuss challenges facing the region, including energy and cyber-security, hybrid threats and terrorism, and will pay great attention to the development of democracy in the Eastern Partnership countries, the Lithuanian parliament said.

Pranckietis will focus on the situation in Ukraine and relations in Russia in his speeches.

“The security situation in Ukraine is deteriorating and there is still a risk of further deterioration. Therefore, Lithuania supports the US decision to extend and deepen sanctions against Russia as it does not show the slightest inclination to implement the Minsk agreements,” the speaker of the Seimas said.

“Lithuania supports Ukraine’s aspirations to become a member of the Customs Union and the Schengen area when Ukraine is ready to,” he added.

Nordic-Baltic Eight, or NB8, is a regional co-operation format that includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden. The countries have cooperated in various areas and at various political levels on a regular basis since 1992. A meeting of the speakers of parliaments is held annually in August.
