Last Friday, the fighter-jets intercepted a Tu-134 passenger airliner flying from the Russian Kaliningrad region to mainland Russia above the Baltic Sea.

It had pre-filed a flight plan, maintained communication with the flight control center but had its onboard transponder turned off.

The NATO air-policing mission in the Baltic states is conducted from Lithuania and Estonia.
