Amber tourism offers untapped opportunities for Lithuania – Neringa mayor

DELFI / Mindaugas Ažušilis

While Lithuania is justifiably proud of its amber, the country needs to think of ways to use the resource to attract more tourists, says Darius Jasaitis, the mayor of the coastal municipality of Neringa.

Mining of amber is one aspect that could be interesting to foreign visitors and Lithuania is in a unique position to be able to offer tours to amber mines and processing workshops, Jasaitis believes.

“We need to be able to present it, to sell. This is, clearly, up to entrepreneurs to do it, but we need to help them with good legislation. This way we could attract tourists by showing the process of amber mining, treatment, grading,” Jasaitis says, adding that other amber-mining countries have fewer possibilities to show-off the process.

The Neringa mayor believes that Lithuania should not sell its amber to foreign companies as raw material.
