Brussels calls extraordinary NEAFC meeting over Lithuanian shipping vessel detained in Russia

Jūros Vilkas

The Commission had asked the president of NEAFC to convene an extraordinary meeting so as to investigate all circumstances of the vessel’s detention, the Lithuanian Agriculture Ministry said in a press release on Tuesday.

Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė told the Informal Council of the European Union’s (EU) Agriculture Ministers in Luxembourg on Monday that Russia’s officials had illegally detained Lithuania-registered vessel Jūros Vilkas in the NEAFC Regulatory Area.

Lithuania is seeking to protect the fishers’ interests with the help of the European Commission, which represents the EU in the NEAFC.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, the satellite monitoring data showed that the Jūros Vilkas was fishing in international waters and was detained therein. Meanwhile, Russia claimed that the vessel was fishing in Russia’s economic zone.
