Banionis passed away in hospital, his son Raimundas Banionis told BNS.
Banionis had been suffering from a heart condition lately.
Throughout his career, Banionis played in more than 100 theatre productions and 50 films. He has been awarded the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Prize and the Grand Cross of Commander of the Order For Merits to Lithuania.
His most internationally known role was the lead in Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1972 science fiction epic Solaris.
