Drunk police officer kills two in car crash in north Lithuania

The three pedestrians were crossing a street on a pedestrian crossing when they were hit by a car at 8:48 PM on Tuesday, the Police Department said. The female victim was killed on the spot and the two men were injured, including one who died in hospital later.

The 46-year-old driver of the vehicle was identified by senior investigator of the local criminal police bureau. An initial investigation revealed his blood alcohol level was 1.42 per mille.

He was taken to custody.

On Wednesday, the Police Department issued a public apology and delivered condolences to the families of the killed people.

In the past, there have been resignations of police chiefs and direct superiors of the police officers involved in accidents claiming human lives.
