Electricity consumption in Lithuania to buck EU trends

Electricity transmission operators predict that Lithuania will be one of the few European countries where electricity consumption will grow annually in the coming decde.

Even though the population of the country is decreasing, electricity consumption is being driven by economic growth.

The country‘s electricity transmission network development plan, which lays out the country’s prospects for the next 10 years, it is stated that the number of thermal power plants will decrease by half and the number of renewable energy plants in Lithuania will double.

Over the next decade, electricity demand in the country’s regions will increase, but production will decrease. It is forecast that demand in Vilnius will grow by one-third and in Kaunas – even more.

Electricity transmission networks in Lithuania will require over €600 million investment over the next decade.
