EP to consider lifting Lithuanian MEP’s immunity

Viktor Uspaskich

The request was transferred for the consideration of the EP Legal Affairs Committee.

This is not the first similar request to revoke Uspaskich’s legal immunity. It was lifted by the EP in 2010 only to be restored after repeated application by Uspaskich. Once the politician became a member of the EP on 1 July 2014, he again gained parliamentary immunity.

The criminal case over alleged illicit funding sources of the Labour Party and bookkeeping fraud was launched in 2006. During the process the issue of the politician’s legal immunity emerged. In 2013 the court found the leader of the Labour Party and some of its members guilty. However, the case against the Labour Party itself was dropped after it was reorganised into a new legal entity. Hearings of prosecution’s appeals began in 2013 but cannot be completed until the EP decides on Uspaskich’s legal immunity.
