“Due to a fire having claimed many lives, the president is postponing his visit to Lithuania, scheduled for Monday. We’ll be looking for a new date,” Lithuanian Ambassador to Greece Rolandas Kačinskas told BNS Lithuania on Tuesday.
In his words, the embassy has no information on Lithuanian casualties and recommends Lithuanian citizens in Greece to avoid forest areas and follow reports of local services. Information is also constantly updated on the Lithuanian Embassy in Greece’s Facebook account.
“The situation around Athens is under control. The most difficult situation was last night and in the morning. Lithuanians who are currently in Athens are in no danger,” the ambassador said.
According to the diplomat, based on the latest figures, at least 54 people have died in the latest fires in Greece and a number of people are missing.
Forest fires have been raging in northern Europe in recent days as well. Lithuania has provided assistance to Latvia and Sweden in fighting them, sending a helicopter with a fire-extinguishing system to each of the countries.
